🐶 Dog pregnancy calculator
How the dog pregnancy calculator works
The calculator adds the average canine gestation length to the date you enter. If you choose ovulation date, it adds 63 days; the day of ovulation is the most accurate anchor, which is why breeders use progesterone testing to find it. If you choose breeding date, it still uses 63 days but the result is less precise, because sperm can live for several days inside the female and the egg needs about two days to mature before it can be fertilized. That biology is why a litter conceived from a single mating can still arrive anywhere from roughly 58 to 68 days later.
The tool then shows a window (about five days either side of the central estimate) rather than a single guaranteed day, because that honestly reflects the natural variation. It also maps out the main pregnancy stages so you know what to expect and when to involve your veterinarian.
Week-by-week dog pregnancy timeline
| Stage | Roughly | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Weeks 1–3 | Days 0–21 | Fertilization and implantation. Few outward signs; keep normal routine and good nutrition. |
| Week 4 | Days 22–28 | Ultrasound can often confirm pregnancy. Some dogs show mild appetite changes. |
| Weeks 5–6 | Days 29–42 | Abdomen begins to enlarge; appetite usually increases. Switch gradually to a growth/puppy diet as your vet advises. |
| Week 7 | Days 43–49 | X-ray can count and size puppies. Prepare the whelping box and quiet area. |
| Week 8 | Days 50–56 | Puppies are well developed; milk may appear. Begin twice-daily temperature checks toward the end. |
| Week 9 | Days 57–65 | Whelping. A temperature drop below ~99°F (37.2°C) often signals labour within 24 hours. |
Caring for a pregnant dog
Good prenatal care is mostly steady, sensible husbandry. Keep your dog at a healthy weight and feed a high-quality diet; from the second half of pregnancy your veterinarian will usually recommend transitioning to a puppy/growth formula to meet the rising energy demand, fed in smaller, more frequent meals as the abdomen fills. Maintain gentle, regular exercise but avoid exhausting activity and rough play. Keep vaccinations and parasite control up to date before breeding where possible, and ask your vet which products are safe during pregnancy. Schedule the ultrasound and X-ray check-ups above so you know how many puppies to expect and can spot trouble early. Our dog feeding guide and puppy feeding guide cover the diet side once the litter arrives.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long are dogs pregnant?
Canine gestation averages about 63 days from ovulation, with a normal range of roughly 58 to 68 days. Counting from a single breeding date is less precise because sperm can survive several days. The most accurate timing comes from progesterone testing to pinpoint ovulation.
Is this calculator accurate?
It gives a useful planning estimate from the 63-day average, not a diagnosis. Litter size and individual variation shift the real date. Only your veterinarian can confirm pregnancy and a reliable due date with ultrasound, X-ray and hormone testing.
When can a dog’s pregnancy be confirmed?
Ultrasound from about day 25–30, X-ray from about day 45 (to count puppies), and relaxin hormone tests can confirm pregnancy. Book a veterinary appointment rather than relying on home signs.
What are the signs that whelping is near?
A temperature drop below about 99°F (37.2°C), nesting, restlessness, panting and loss of appetite in the last day or two. Twice-daily temperature checks in the final week help you anticipate labour.
